USA triumph in Maccabi golf tournament

Team USA won the ninth Maccabi Transatlantic Cup by 21 and a half to 14 and a half to lead the series 5-4.

Scratch representative teams of golfers from Great Britain and America competed at Coombe Hill Golf Club over three days of intense competition in the Jewish equivalent of the Ryder Cup.

Started in 1995 and then held in 1996 and every two years since, the MTC has become the premier Jewish golfing event outside the Maccabiah Games itself.

Matches were very tight with several matches decided by one-hole margins.

Hapoel realising Champions League dream

Moni Harel, the chairman of Hapoel Tel Aviv, believes that his team can make history after reaching the group stages of the Champions League for the first time.

The Reds drew 1-1 with Red Bull Salzburg at the Bloomfield Stadium on Tuesday night to book their place after going through 4-3 on aggregate.

An own goal from Douglas da Silva, Hapoel's Brazilian defender, left the tie on tenterhooks with the Austrians needing one more goal to go through.

Manchester Maccabi football round-up

Manchester Maccabi 1sts’ preparation for the new season continue.

They were beaten in a seven-goal thriller by Smedley Rangers of the Manchester Saturday League on August 19. Josh Rubin, Michael Green and Ryan Sylvester were the marksmen.

Trailing 1-0 at the break. Rubin squared things up from 20 yards, keeping his cool in a one-on-one situation two minutes into the second half.

Maccabi forged ahead minutes later following a great run by Andy Rosenberg, which took him past three men, to cross for Ryan Sylvester who made no mistake.

Hapoel Tel Aviv reach Champions League group stage

Hapoel Tel Aviv became only the third Israeli club to reach the group stages of the Champions League following a nail-biting draw against Red Bull Salzburg last night.

Leading 3-2 from the first leg in Austria, and with three crucial away goals in the bank, Hapoel looked nervous throughout the first half, seemingly unsure whether to keep Salzburg at arm’s length or go on the attack. For the first 45 minutes they did neither.

LMV 2nd edged out by Crouch End

London Maccabi Vale were beaten by 10 runs by Crouch End in a friendly.

Following heavy overnight rain the Crouch End wicket was hard but a little damp and LMV captain Jonathan Lederman had no hesitation in deciding to bowl first on winning the toss.

Excellent opening spells from both Simon Renshaw and Jonathan Freedman, who also managed to nip out a couple of batsmen, immediately put Crouch End on the back foot.

Newly promoted Middlesex Sunday League Division Three outfit MAL were beaten by 24 runs in a friendly against Octopus in Highgate.

Skipper Gav Lebens won the toss and chose to field, with the outfield long and the pitch a little damp. Michael Klinger and Mark Lazar bowled well with the new ball, Lazar picking up a wicket with his first ball, a fine caught and bowled to dismiss Lamplough.

Israel football league round-up

Israel’s Ligat Ha’Al returned to action over the weekend with a 1-0 defeat for champions Hapoel Tel Aviv away to Hapoel Haifa.

Croatian midfielder Sasha Stojano scored the only goal of the game just after the interval as the champions rested half their first team ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League play-off against Red Bull Salzburg.

Salford second best in NJCL

Salford clinched the runners-up spot in the NJCL by the narrowest of margins following a convincing win over Manchester Maccabi.

A low-scoring contest saw Salford run out victors by 40 runs. They claimed 18 points to Maccabi’s seven.

Batting first, Salford posted 146-8. Maccabi were skittled for 106.

The day’s other match saw Leeds beat Bury by 10 wickets.

Leeds put Bury into bat on a damp slow wicket and were made to work for their wickets.
