Bronze for Mills

Israel's Noam Mills took bronze at the senior European Championships in Leipzig. Competing in the women's epee, Mills produced her best result of the season and career best as a senior.

A good first round with three victories out of five fights positioned her for a decisive 15-7 win over the Ukraine's Ksenija Panteleyeva at the start of direct elimination, followed by a 12-10 win on time against Anna Sivkova of Russia in the last-32 stage. Two more good wins saw the Mills, 25, facing world No.13 Imke Duplitzer of Germany, to whom she went out 15-8. Duplitzer went on to take gold.

Nakash on course

Ran Nakash, the unbeaten Israeli cruiserweight, moved a step closer to a world title shot after outpointing Victor Barragan over 10 hard rounds to claim his 25th straight professional victory.

Nakash, taken the distance for only the sixth time, took the decision by scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 96-94 over Barragan, a late replacement, at The Arena in Philadelphia.

The 32-year-old Haifa fighter is now being lined up to fight American Bobby Gunn, who has twice challenged for world titles.

Southgate strikes it rich

football The format for JC MSFL season 2010/11 was confirmed at the league AGM.

Following a restructuring of the league, Southgate Harmen A accepted a League Management Committee invitation to play in Premier Division for the first time. Hendon United B requested relegation into Division One. FC Team A and Chigwell Athletic moved into Division One, while Montana Boca United B, L'Equipe and Hendon C go into Division Two.

Shirley shines at National Junior Bowl

Shirley won the coveted Hartsbourne Trophy at the National Junior Bowl.

The West Midlands club tied with Lee Park under the regular format of four out of six scores counting but when all six scores were taken into account, Shirley triumphed by one shot.

Lee Park took home the Potters Bar Cup as runner-up.

Celtic confirm Kayal signing

Celtic have unveiled Israeli Biram Kayal as their latest signing.

As we reported last Friday, the 22-year-old holding midfield joined on a four-year deal, subject to completion of final paperwork.

The midfielder becomes Neil Lennon's seventh signing of the close season, joining Efrain Juarez, Charlie Mulgrew, Cha Du-Ri, Joe Ledley, Daryl Murphy and Gary Hooper at Celtic Park.

He has already gained 13 caps for Israel.

Fergie defends the Glazers

Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, has come to the defence of the Glazer family, insisting criticism of the club owners is unfair.

The Americans, who took full control of United in 2005, are unpopular with a large section of the Old Trafford faithful despite United being the number one football club in the world on the Forbes Rich List with an estimated value of £1.18billion. However, the debt is over £700million.

Hapoel pays the penalty in Champions League first leg

Hapoel Tel Aviv must overturn a one-goal deficit in Israel next Tuesday if they are to keep alive their hopes of reaching the group stages of the Champions League.

A second half penalty from Aktobe skipper Samat Smakov gave the hosts a narrow advantage from Wednesday’s third qualifying first leg in Kazakhstan.

The Israeli champions featured keeper Vincent Enyeama, who represented Nigeria at last month's World Cup, while Ben Sahar, the former Chelsea striker who recently joined on a 12-month loan from Espanyol, came on in the second half.

Manchester Maccabi in pre-season opener

A Manchester Maccabi Select XI started their pre-season programme against semi-pro outfit Flixton at Brooklands.

In a game broken into three periods of 30 minutes, Flixton featured 14 members of their 18-man squad along with several trialists.

The first period finished 1-1 with Maccabi’s Marc Woolfe exchanging goals with Flixton’s Jed Williams. Flixton went on to win the second and third period by 1-0 scorelines.

Belmont & Edgware edged out by Chelsea

Belmont & Edgware fell narrowly short of beating Kensington & Chelsea in the Middlesex League on Sunday.

After being asked to field, BECC restricted the Kensington batsmen early on, before the run rate climbed after the halfway point. Gideon Restan bowled brilliantly and took four wickets for the second week in a row, before breaking his finger taking his second catch of the day.

Oli Simons, on his return to BECC action for the first time since 2008, and Ashley Connick each picked up three wickets, whilst Ami Wynbourne and Neil Myeroff bowled well for no reward.
