Israel's World Cup to start in Azerbaijan

Israel will open its World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign away to Azerbaijan on September 7.

The team, currently managed by Luis Fernandez, welcome Russia to Ramat Gan four days later.

The fixtures for Group F, which see Israel also pitted alongside Portugal, , Northern Ireland, and Luxembourg, were decided today when heads of the national football associations met in Luxembourg.

Barnsley pull out of Assulin loan move

Barnsley have pulled out of a deal to sign Gai Assulin on loan.

The Israeli had agreed to join the Tykes until January 3 but manager Keith Hill decided to back down. due to concerns over the Manchester City midfielder’s fitness.

Hill told the club’s official website: "On advice from the medical staff at Man City, it's just a deal that we can't do.


Shachar gets a lift

Shachar Head has been nominated for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Head, 15, will discover next week if she has been short-listed for the prestigious awards ceremony which takes place in Salford next month.

She was nominated by her school after a record-breaking performance to win the teenage one class at the World Drug Free Powerlifting World Championships, as well as the JC


Majestic Matt stops Tottenham

Matt Davis was one of the stars of the show as Enfield Town beat a Spurs XI 2-1 in a match to mark the official opening of Enfield's new Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

The Team GB keeper produced a series of outstanding saves against a strong Tottenham team including Andros Townsend.

Davis said: "I was delighted with the my performance.


2012 dream on for Sela

Dudi Sela boosted his chances of playing at the 2012 London Olympics after reaching the final of the Challenger Tour Finals in Sao Paulo.

A series of strong performances from the Israeli have seen him climb 11 places to finish the season 83rd in the world rankings.

Israel's Olympic Committee will pick Sela for the London Games only if he reaches the top 50.

Call for tougher punishments for racism on the pitch
