Euro success for Israel

Israel claimed a record medal haul at the European Swimming Championships in Hungary.

Jonatan Kopelev earned Israel their first-ever gold medal at the Championships by winning the 50m backstroke in Debrecen.

Kopelev said: “The feeling is immense. It’s amazing. I’ve got shivers all over my body.”

Peer blown away by Ivanovic

Shahar Peer is out of the French Open after she was beaten by 13th seed Ana Ivanovic in just 55 minutes.

The Israeli was unable to repeat the form which saw her beat Ivanovic on all their three previous meetings.

She bowed out 2-6, 2-6 against the Serbian.

Peer in, Sela out at French Open

There were mixed fortunes for Israel's top players in the opening round of the singles competition at the French Open at Roland Garros.

Shahar Peer, ranked 55, cruised into the second round with a straight sets victory over Stephanie Dubois (97) of Canada.

Dudi Sela tumbled out 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 against seventh seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.

Lipman wins top prize at Hendon

Central defender Josh Lipman won the coveted Players' Player of the Season award at Hendon United Sports Club A.

Lipman completed a stand-out year by edging out midfield maestro Greg Corin in a memorable campaign where the Reds won the treble.

Goalkeeper Russell Corin was named Managers' Player of the Year, by David Garbacz.

Cardiff edged out by Atradians

Cardiff Maccabi suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of Old Atradians in the Cardiff Midweek Cricket League Division Three.

Playing their fourth match of the season, Cardiff bowled first and an excellent four-wicket burst from 16-year-old Stefan Rollnick, in his first game of the season, helped restrict Atradians to 118/9 from 18 overs.

Kopelev claims historic gold for Israel at Euros

Jonatan Kopelev became the first Israeli European swimming champion ever when he won the 50-meter backstroke by blowing away the field with a time of 24.73 seconds.

Compatriot Guy Barnea came home in third in 25.14 seconds to ensure that two Israelis made the podium in the same European Championships for the first time.
