Samuel Jerome, 10, has achieved a first degree black belt in his shotokan style.

Originally from Alwoodley, Leeds, his family emigrated to Toronto last year. He received his belt at a graduation ceremony at York University.

Jerome has started qualifying for his second degree black belt and is determined to become one of the youngest competitors for England or Canada at the Maccabiah Games. Sam said: "There are only three things in life of importance - eating, sleeping and karate."
Baron Son, 93, said: "I'm very proud to call my great grandson Sensei Sam."
