Depleted BECC hold their own

A greatly depleted Belmont & Edgware 1st team played their first game of the season against Middlesex League Division One side Graces, after the previous week's opposition cancelled.

New captain Michael Blasebalk won the toss and decided to bat. On 39-1, opener Jeremy Freeman (30) was joined by Simon Durban (34) and together they moved the score to 77-2. Captain Blasebalk (12), Richie Weinburg (21) and Nick McCleod (12) all helped move the score on. Unfortunately new member Michael Ziff ran out of partners in the 38th over and finished on 12 not out, with the score on 156.

Freeman (8-1-32-2) and Neil Myeroff (8-4-13-0) started the bowling attack and restricted the run rate. Eventually hard work paid off with Freeman taking two of the top-order batsmen in two balls. This followed his attempt at a caught and bowled bullet that damaged his bowling hand. Weinburg (8-2-23-0) kept the pressure on. Youngster Jack Mendel had his first experience in the first team and had a good five-over spell and collected a wicket for his efforts. Ziff picked up the remaining two wickets to finish a very productive day for him. Unfortunately the opposition won with a few overs to spare.

As a start to the season this was a good performance and hopefully a warm-up for next week's Middlesex Sunday League match.
