A typically brutal innings by Player of the Year Akiva Lieberman plus excellent spells from Huddy Lieberman and Shaya Rabinowitz helped South Manchester Sports cruise to victory against Manchester Maccabi.

Maccabi won the toss and asked South to bat on a very green wicket following the recent downpours. The new opening pair of Huddy Lieberman and Simon Jeffries got off to a great start putting on 47 for the first wicket before Jeffries fell to debutant Mainzer for 12.

That brought Akiva Lieberman to the crease to partner up with his brother, and it soon became clear that he was carrying on where he left off last season. A fine innings of 70 including three huge sixes in one over from Schogger was a great start to the season.

Brother Huddy was out just three short of a half century. The middle order did not live up to expectation but there was a good contribution from Rabinovitz of 24.

Wickets fell cheaply and South were 207-9. However, South’s batting is showing it to be somewhat more resilient than last season. David Cohen and Jonathan Lieberman, rolling back the years, put on 61 for the final wicket.

Cohen finished on an undefeated 43 with Lieberman on 32 as South used up their overs well to finish up on 268 all out. Only Schogger of the Maccabi bowlers with 4-53 came away with respectable figures.

It was quite clear that this was a target that was way beyond the Maccabi team and when the opening pair of Tammam and Pearlman both fell without scoring, they were soon in trouble.

Huddy Lieberman with 3-18 off his 10 overs and an outstanding spell from Rabinovitz of 4-9 was enough to reduce Maccabi to 81 all out. Cohen rounded off a great contribution with 2-14 and a wicket for debutant Goldstone only emphasised South strong bowling attack.

The margin of victory of 187 runs was one of the largest recorded.
