Paper talk inspires Haroldeans
Haroldeans boss Ivan Gee says Sporting JLGB’S determination to end his side’s unbeaten start to the season was the motivating factor behind an eighth successive league victory.
Sporting manager Gavin Sharpe had come out with some fighting pre-match talk by claiming his team were ready to put an end to the Merseysiders’ stunning run of form.
But two goals from Cabral Christian and a Danny Burman header were enough to give Haroldeans a 3-1 win and silence Sharpe’s troops.
“I didn’t need to give the boys a team talk before the game because I just got them to read the article in the JC,” said Gee.
“Sporting were saying how they could beat us and would love to end our unbeaten run and that really fired the boys up.
“We had 13 players out for the game and I really thought we might have lost points but we never looked like we would.
“I thought Sporting might have given us a tougher test but it was a good win for us and the bandwagon keeps on running.”
It took just five minutes for Haroldeans to take the lead with Christian finding time and space to fire the visitors ahead.
And the midfielder doubled his tally 20 minutes later after running in behind the Sporting backline and lifting the ball over the goalkeeper.
Moshe Hasid pulled a goal back for the home side but Burman’s header sealed the points and moved Haroldeans nine points clear at the summit.
“It was good win because we had a lot of players out but we played very well,” added Gee.
“The results are going for us at the moment and we’re in the lead by quite a way but we must not get complacent.
“What we can’t afford to do is drop silly points and let the other teams back into it.
“We know the run can’t go on forever and we’ll slip up eventually but we have five more league games now until the end of the year.
“If we can win all of those then we’ll have a great chance of winning the title.”
