Scott Spurling completed a gruelling schedule by helping the England Sevens team to victory at the Under 19 Commonwealth Games in the Isle of Man.

Playing at hooker, Spurling, 18, helped England maintain a 100 per cent record at the eight-team event where they beat South Africa 41-20 in the final at the Bowl Stadium.

Spurling, from Edgware, played in all five matches, including a 19-5 win against Scotland in the semi-finals. This followed wins over South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago and Sri Lanka in the group phase.

"It was a great experience as the Sevens game is a lot quicker," said Spurling. "We had quite a young team too, with a 16-year-old and a few players aged 17 in the squad so it was good for us to win by those margins.

"On finals day, we beat the Isle of Man, Scotland and South Africa, which was more convincing than the scoreline suggested."

Spurling also helped the full England Under 18 team win a test match against Australia. This followed victories against State XI's.

He said: "The tour was good but tough. We achieved our goal of winning all three matches, with the best performance coming in the test. Winning in Australia made it even more special."
