Stuart Shapiro can't wait to get started when his Republic of Mancunia team take on South Manchester 2nd in the MJSL Charity shield.

Republic, who finished second last year and won the Shonn Trophy, suffered heartbreak in their final game of last season after losing out on the title to Manchester Maccabi 3rd.

Shapiro is now hoping his side can go one better and hit the ground running with Sporting JLGB providing the opposition on the opening day of the league season.

"We had a really good season going on all three fronts and we won a cup so it's a good operation," said Shapiro.

"I've been very impressed. I've been at Maccabiahs as a player and manager and this is as well run as anything I've seen.

"We've got a pretty strong team and I'm not making too many changes"

South Manchester 2nd manager Neil Collins is also relishing the new season with his side gunning for glory after the disappointment of slipping out of last year's title race

"We want to make a really strong push for the title," he said.

"We lost games we shouldn't have and although we don't have that many players to choose from, the first team have a very strong squad and that can only enhance our team."
