Brad's silver lining

Brad Solomon was bursting with pride after GB's Women's team claimed their first-ever football medal.

A 3-1 victory over Germany saw them take silver and finish as the top European side in a three-team event.

The event started badly for GB who were crushed 7-0 by runaway winners USA in their opening match.

But they bounced back in style, thumping Germany 9-1 with three goals from Sara Lyons plus one apiece from Raquel Lewis, Sophie Lawrence, Jennifer Palmer, Samantha Miller, Michaela Green and an own goal.

The Brits improved during their next meeting with the Americans, fighting valiantly before eventually succumbing to a 3-0 defeat.

In a winner-takes-all final match, strikes from Lyons, Miller and Green saw GB finish on a high.

"I have been involved in Jewish women's football for 14 years and I've never felt so proud about a group of players that were not my family," said Solomon.

"I've been in football long enough to know that it isn't always about the performance. To win our first medal in only our second tournament makes this a very proud moment.

"The girls deserve full credit as they put their bodies on the line.

"The aim now is to keep this group of players together for the next two years. It's a great development opportunity and when we go to the Maccabiah, we will go to Israel with the respect of being winners. This has never happened before."

Captain Tamar Koch said: "To win silver feels amazing. It's a brilliant achievement.

"It's a result of a few years of hard slog from every player. All the time and work has paid off .
