Masters futsal two good for Germany

Adam Lustigman, manager of the Team GB Masters futsal squad, believes his troops can win the tournament after they made a winning start - beating Germany 2-0.

Second half strikes from Danny Schweiger, who is taking part in his 11th international Maccabi event, and newcomer Jamie Kaye earned GB a hard fought win in their opening match.

Lustigman said: "We performed as well as I could've hoped for, after all the preparation and training over the past 10 months. From front to back, we worked hard.

A goalless first half saw Schweiger come close with a powerful drive that smacked against the post.

GB continued to threaten in the second half with Paul Shamplina denied by a smart tip over the bar by the German keeper.

At the other end, GB stopper Phil Caplin was in top form, producing one top-notch save with his foot to keep out a shot arrowing into the bottom corner, as well as several other crucial blocks.

After having Laurence Newman booked for infringing during a substitution - coming on to the pitch before the player had gone off - GB stormed into the lead when a brilliant first-time passing move saw Schweiger beat the German keeper at his near post with a precision finish.

Max Radford came close to adding a second. He was denied by a sprawling save before Newman hit the post from an acute angle.

Caplin's crucial save, with five minutes remaining, enabled Kaye to burst forward in the last minute to clinch the game with a fine solo run and finish.

There were also outstanding performances from Maccabiah debutante Mark Wagman, a double winner with Brady Maccabi, and Paul Shamplina, while Danny Reuben, Max Radford, Olly Olsen and Hadley Silver showed good work-rate and all played their part in a vital victory.

Lustigman said: "Having seen the way we performed, as well as a couple of our opponents, I'm fairly confident we can go all the way."
