Manchester Maccabi triumph in first ever Vets Challenge winning over a valiant South Manchester Sports Club at Brooklands.

Captain Sheldon Lee received the Nat Bowman Trophy from local MP Ivan Lewis as Maccabi won 4-2.

Keith Herman opened the scoring for South with a superb 20-yard volley from a free kick after just five minutes.

The equaliser came on 12 minutes when Rick Buxton was left unmarked and had an easy chance to slot the ball home.

Maccabi restored the lead 10 minutes later when Mark Sheldon converted a penalty after a rash challenge on Howard Lee.

The early exchanges in the second half saw the lead extended when Michael Freedman slipped the ball home at the second attempt.

On 50 minutes a magnificent volley from Mark Sheldon crashed against the underside of the bar and into the net to all to ensure victory,.

A late rally meant that South hit back and Dan Simons finished off a nice move to make it a more respectable 4-2.
