LM Vale close in on Middlesex League title
London Maccabi Vale 1st marched 12 points clear at the top of the Middlesex Sunday League Division Two table after beating Finchley by 62 runs at Arden Field.
A third wicket partnership of 161, last 107 minutes and 24 overs, between opener Danny Caro and captain Adam Brand enabled LMV to post 258-5 from their 40 overs.
Things did not start well however as Alex Haffner was caught behind attempting a pull while Daniel Becker was caught behind.
But Caro and Brand gradually took the game away from Finchley. With conditions perfect for batting, Brand found the boundary with great regularity and his knock of 104 from 72 deliveries included 15 fours and one six.
Rotating the strike well, Brand and Caro maintained a run rate of close to seven an over. Caro’s 79-ball score of 71 included 11 boundaries.
The captain and vice-captain departed in quick succession allowing Seb Schusman, a star of last year’s GB Junior Maccabiah team, to show his quality with a cameo of 36 not out from 31 balls.
Finchley’s reply did not get off to the best start as Saul Weitzman and Daniel Cohen got amongst them, with the first three batsmen bowled.
Weitzman (7.3-0-29-2) and Cohen (7-2-20-5) ripped the heart out of the Finchley innings as they staged to 44-6, although the game was not over as hosts were given a mid-order reprieve when Haffner and Cohen, twice at slip, put down catches.
This allowed Finchley’s last four wickets to produce 152 runs.
But some good bowling from Schusman ensured that LMV would maintain their unbeaten record with a fifth league victory.
