Richard Goodman registered his most prestigious track title in winning the English Schools 3,000m in Birmingham.
The Maccabiah double gold medallist from Stanmore fought a duel with Shaftesbury training partner Niall Flemming.
Goodman said: "I was very confident before the race. I knew the opposition well from previous races, and reckoned that Niall was my biggest threat. Our coach, Geoff Williams, had instructed us to break away from the pack with four laps to go and share the effort. This plan worked and we built up a gap on the others. Over the last lap Niall was leading but I put on a decisive sprint in the home straight to win."
Goodman finished in 8:25.15, two seconds in front of Flemming.
During the remainder of the track season, Goodman will race over various distances hoping to improve his personal bests. He will also be attending a training camp where he will be advised by Paula Radcliffe.
