Davis Cup organisers have confirmed that Israel’s Davis Cup World Group match in Chile go ahead as scheduled despite last week’s devastating earthquake.

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) insisted that the tie geso ahead and even chartered a plane to bring the Israelis to Chile on Tuesday. The Israeli team was en route to Chile last weekend when the quake struck but the flight was rerouted to Miami.

Israel had planned to spend the week practicing on clay courts, although Chile's plans have been equally disrupted with their star players arriving home later than scheduled.

Doubles specialist Andy Ram, who arrived in Chile on a rerouted flight several hours after the earthquake, spent much of the week in Santiago by himself. He said: “It’s difficult to see the sporting value in staging the match, when we are surrounded by so much death and destruction.”
