James Gershfield helped Wingate & Finchley put a bad week behind them with a thumping 4-0 victory over lowly Leyton in the Ryman League Division One North.
In a match dominated by the Blues, Gershfield, who came on at the start of the second half, scored one and terrorised the Leyton defence with a display that typified his Maccabiah Games selection last summer.
In a win that lifted Wingate into ninth in the table, the first chance fell to Jake Furman but from 10 yards, he sliced his shot wide.
The goal finally arrived just before the half hour mark. Marc Weatherstone floated in a perfect cross from deep in the full-back position and Dave Laird glanced a header beautifully into the top left corner of the goal.
Just before the break Furman was sent racing clear down the right into the box but his shot across goal took a slight touch off the keeper's legs and bounced up on o the post.
The Blues had a short period of intense pressure at the start of the second half; Michael Lenahan shot from 20 yards just over the bar, then sub ershfield was put through on goal but his low effort was diverted wide. From the resulting Jordan Fowler corner Gershfield flicked the ball towards goal from the near post but the
ball whistled over the bar
Ahmet Rifat double the lead before Gershfield took the game by the scruff of the neck. He claimed a sensational individual goal after spinning his marker, sprinting into the area and clipping the
ball in at the near post.
Gershfield nearly scored again with a cheeky backheel from but he missed the right post.
Wingate scored a fourth in the closing stages through James Edgerley, and Gershfield came close twice before full time; he hit the bar from six yards and then shot straight at the keeper.
