Newman takes British title
Josh Newman was this week toasting double delight after a standout performance at the British Championships.
Newman from Billericay won the individual and Synchro competitions at the National finals at the LG-NEC Arena in Birmingham.
His double gold capped a memorable few months that has seen him accumulate seven gold, one silver and a bronze during the domestic season. He has also claimed the British National schools gold medal and the Australian youth Olympic festival synchro gold medal cementing his place for the second year as the no. 1 under-15 in Great Britain.
Newman saved his best for last in Birmingham, beating his previous personal best score in the preliminaries and beating his synchro partner and main rival Rhys Northover into second and his former partner Robin Hartey into third.
Newman and Northover had earlier picked up the gold medal in the Synchro event - a straight final in which they had not been beaten all season.
"It was great to win both events as I was beaten by half a mark in last year’s individual final after winning nearly all the National galas,” said Newman.
"I was very disappointed last year so this year is all the sweeter and I have made a massive progression since joining Gillingham Jumpers."
He will now take a few days off before turning his attention to the World Championships in Bulgaria. He will also take part in training sessions for the Great Britain national squad.
