Dream year for Doncaster's Furman

Dean Furman says Doncaster's dramatic dash to the League One title has capped off a dream year.

The midfielder spent the weekend celebrating promotion to the Championship after Rovers clinched an incredible last-gasp win at League One rivals Brentford.

Rovers scored in the final minute of the final game of the season, just seconds after the Brentford had missed a penalty – a spot kick which would have seen the Bees pip Rovers to promotion.

And Furman, whose loan deal from Oldham has now expired, says Saturday’s title triumph has rounded off an dream year, which saw him establish himself on the international stage with South Africa.

“It has been an absolute whirlwind,” he told the JC.

“I have to pinch myself because I never actually thought things like this were possible.

“It is why I do this and it’s why I’ve worked so hard and to finish the season off by winning the championship is incredible.

“Some players go through their entire careers without winning anything and so this is just fantastic.”

Saturday’s dramatic conclusion to Doncaster’s season left Furman in a daze with the club looking destined for the play-offs when Brentford were awarded the chance to seal victory from 12-yards.

He said: “I was just standing there thinking, ‘How are we going to lift ourselves after this?’

“I had so much emotion going through me and I was just thinking, ‘Play-offs? Two more weeks of the season? How are we going to do it?’

“Then they’ve missed the penalty and we’ve gone up the other end and scored. It was simply unbelievable. It’s still a blur.”

Furman has enjoyed a stellar season; breaking into the national side and helping the country qualify for the quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The 24-year-old won rave reviews for his performances and is already attracting attention from a whole host of Championship clubs.

“I want to play at the highest level I can and that’s what I’ve worked hard to do,” he added.

“I’ll go away now and then come back, discuss my options with the family and my agent and make a decision.”
