Angela Duce appointed senior post at Norwood

Angela Duce has been appointed to a new senior post at Norwood, heading up its services to adults with learning disabilities. Drawing on more than 20 years' experience in the field, she comes to Norwood from Shaw Healthcare, a Cardiff-based health and social care organisation. She was previously head of operations at MacIntyre, a large learning disabilities charity, and has also worked for Milbury - now known as Voyage - one of the largest learning disability providers in the UK.


Suprise lunch to honour Mary Chambers

The United Synagogue administrators' group organised a surprise lunch at their quarterly meeting at Stanmore Synagogue to honour Mary Chambers, who is celebrating 30 years in the post at Bushey.

She was presented with a bouquet on behalf of her fellow administrators by Clayhall Synagogue's Michelle Mervish before the arrival of a Bushey delegation, including minister Rabbi Meir Salasnik, for the lunch.


Stanmore Jacs celebrates 30th anniverary

More than 100 people helped to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Stanmore Jacs, the inaugural branch of the Jewish Association of Cultural Societies, which caters to the over-55s. Those at the tea party included the association's founder and recently retired chairman Annette Pearlman, who congratulated the group on its enduring popularity.


Summer fete raises £12,000 at Jewish Care's Princess Alexandra home

Over £12,000 was raised from a summer fete in the grounds of Jewish Care's Princess Alexandra home. The event attracted a 1,000 crowd for entertainment ranging from a bouncy castle and face painting to model car racing and a "beat the goalie" challenge. Organisation was a team effort involving a Jewish Care committee, League of Jewish Women and Wizo members and the home's staff and volunteers.


Hikers boost Camp Simcha

Twelve friends from Stanmore and Finchley have hit the heights for Camp Simcha — which helps Jewish children with life-threatening illnesses and their families — by scaling Ben Nevis to raise £14,000.


Memorial service for chazan Chaim Graniewitz

More than 200 Stanmore and Canons Park Synagogue members attended a memorial service for chazan Chaim Graniewitz, who died in January, aged 77. United Synagogue leaders joined the congregation and a letter was read out from Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, recalling Rev Graniewitz’s “passion and pride in Judaism and the Jewish people. He had the ability to empathise and to bring a smile to faces in difficult times.” Tributes were also paid by Stanmore senior minister Rabbi Mendel Lew and Rev Graniewitz’s sons David and Steven.


The grand Scopus of Berman's batmitzvah

Natalie Berman had a belated batmitzvah ceremony at Mount Scopus, overlooking Jerusalem, after taking part in the FZY year scheme. The 19-year-old from Stanmore said it was “a wonderful experience. It meant a lot to me that my mum flew out for it. I can’t read Hebrew very well so it was a real achievement that I did not make any mistakes.”


Birthday parties draw the crowds

American rock band Blue Fringe hit the right note for 250 revellers at Stanmore Synagogue’s Israel 60th birthday bash, The group of four twentysomethings, who met at Yeshiva University in 2001, played a Jewish-themed set of pop, rock, funk and R&B to a predominantly youthful audience.


Businessman’s not guilty plea

A businessman who has pleaded not guilty to five counts of false accounting will face trial in January next year. Alan David Meltzer, 60, from Stanmore, Middlesex, appeared at Harrow Crown Court last Wednesday.
