Volunteer ‘Oscar’ for bereavement group

A Queen's Award for Voluntary Service recognises the contribution of Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue's Bereavement Support Group over a 17-year period.

The group has provided comfort and support to those within and outside the Jewish community who have suffered a bereavement.

At Sunday's ceremony, local MP Nick Hurd - also Minister for Civil Society, whose department administers the Queen's Award - said it was the volunteers' Oscar.

Pinner rabbi to retire

Pinner Synagogue's Rabbi Yaakov Grunewald - the United Synagogue's longest-serving rabbi - is to retire in October after 35 years' service.

Addressing the shul's AGM, Pinner chairman Howard Lewis said: "For the vast majority of members, he is the only rabbi they have known. The Pinner community is indebted to the rabbi for his communal input, his humility and his efforts over the years to ensure the community has remained vibrant and unified."

Liberal Judaism's new haggadah

Liberal Judaism has published a new haggadah, its first revision for nearly 30 years.

Co-edited by Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue Elstree and Rabbi Aaron Goldstein of Northwood and Pinner Liberal Synagogue, it continues the trend towards greater traditionalism with more biblical and rabbinic material than its 1981 predecessor.

Among innovative features are references to contemporary forms of slavery such as children's sweatshops and the trafficking of women for the sex trade.

Accountant jailed for £100k fraud

An accountant has been jailed for two years for fraud and deception involving sums up to £100,000.

Fred Blacher, 65, of Grange Gardens, Pinner, had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing at Isleworth Crown Court in west London to charges of obtaining property by deception, fraud by abuse of his position and dishonestly making a false representation.

He has appeared there again and Judge Edmunds QC sentenced him to two years on each charge, with the sentences running concurrently, giving a total of two years in prison.
