Driver who killed Northwood couple jailed for seven years

A drunk-driver has been sentenced to seven years in jail for killing a married couple from Northwood after he lost control of the car and swerved on to the pavement.

Alan Bernard, 53, and wife Rochelle, 51, died last September when a car crashed into them as they were walking down a road in Dorset. A friend of theirs was seriously injured in the accident.

Scandinavia's first woman rabbi is to lead services for the Liberal Jewish Community in Crouch End.

Rabbi Sandra Kviat, 31, was recently ordained at Leo Baeck and has already been taken on by the Liberal Judaism head office to advise on educational and other issues.

Pack leader enjoys landslide win at US

The new United Synagogue president is Stephen Pack, who scored a landslide victory over outgoing US vice-president Peter Zinkin in Monday's poll.

Mr Pack, 61, is president of Hadley Wood, a satellite of Cockosters and North Southgate Synagogue. He attributed his 124-42 vote victory to his emphasis on making the US more attractive to younger people.

Rabbi Baruch Davis of Chigwell Synagogue is the new chair of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue, having defeated Wembley Synagogue's Rabbi Simon Harris in an election on Tuesday.

Rabbis David Lister and Nissan Wilson are the vice-chairmen.

Elsewhere, Rabbi Mark Goldsmith of North Western Reform Synagoue was voted in as head of the Assembly of Reform Rabbis.

The clothes show by Moriah pupils

Moriah Primary pupils took to the catwalk on Monday as stars of a fashion show sponsored by high street chain River Island.

More than 50 pupils from the Pinner school modelled the latest styles, watched by an audience in excess of 400.

The £4,000-plus raised will help to fill gaps in funding from government and the local authority and a drop in parental contributions.

Young Brits join Tony Blair's fight against malaria

Two British Jews are among 30 young people who have been selected from more than 700 hopefuls to become fellows of Tony Blair's Faith Foundation.

From July Catherine Mansoor, from Middlesex, and Anthony Silkoff, from Essex, will be joined on the programme by three Jewish fellows from North America, as well as representatives from Christianity, Islam and other world religions.
