Not quite equal as Fed shul elects woman chair

Loughton Federation Synagogue has chosen a woman, Barbara Cohen, to chair its administrative board of management. But the position is not equivalent to a synagogue chairman.

Unlike the United Synagogue, which has recently allowed women to chair congregations, women in the Federation cannot serve as synagogue officers.

Sacks leaves Rome with a Beatles song memory

Lord Sacks performed one of his last inductions as Chief Rabbi for the Rev David Rome at Catford and Bromley Synagogue.

He told the congregation of 400, including four south London mayors and senior clergy, that, for him, the occasion was summarised by the Beatles song Hello, Goodbye. “As one door closes another opens, Reverend Rome says hello and I say goodbye.”

London protest planned against Israel hosting Uefa Under-21s

Anti-Israel protesters are planning a demonstration in central London on Friday in the latest bid to prevent Israel from hosting the European Under-21 football championship next month.

Red Card Israeli Racism has called for boycott supporters to protest outside the Grosvenor House Hotel, where European football’s governing body, Uefa, is holding its annual conference.

Shenley's wizard from Oz

Rabbi Alan Garber will be returning to the UK from Australia to take up the Shenley Synagogue pulpit.

Shenley members unanimously supported the appointment of the minister and his wife Tanya on Sunday, and the Garbers are expected to start work before the High Holy-Days.

Leaders promote vaccination after 41 cases of measles reported

Strictly Orthodox rabbis met a senior Hackney public health official on Thursday to discuss the rising number of measles cases in the community.

Statistics released by Public Health England (PHE) this week record 41 cases of measles within the capital’s strictly Orthodox population since the beginning of the year.

Bone marrow match found for Sharon Berger

A bone marrow donor has been found for critically ill Harrow grandmother Sharon Berger after a four month campaign by family and friends to find a match in the Jewish community.

Ms Berger suffers from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a malfunction of the bone marrow in producing blood cells. “I have had no immune system for six years,” she said.
