Footballing rabbi scores highly with Richmond Synagogue

A rabbi who was once on the books of the Reading and Swindon Town football academies has met Richmond Synagogue’s selection goals.

Rabbi Jonny Hughes and his wife Chana, currently the associate rabbinic couple at Hendon Synagogue, start at Richmond in November, where they will lead a congregation of over 200 members. The number of young families is growing and there is a thriving cheder.

New address for next Chief Rabbi?

United Synagogue president Stephen Pack said this week that no decision had been taken on the future of the Chief Rabbi’s residence in Hamilton Terrace after being quizzed on whether it would be put up for sale.

At a US Council meeting on Monday, St John’s Wood Synagogue representative Ronnie Lossos called for the retention of the premises in the prestigious St John’s Wood street.

Desert Island castaway helps out Glasgow Girls

But the lucky — or greedy — television and film producer, Steve Morrison, managed to play 12 iconic tracks at a fundraising evening held by the charity, Glasgow Girls in London.

The North West London Jewish Day School has improved its overall Ofsted rating from good to outstanding in its latest inspection.

Inspectors also found pupil achievement, teaching quality and leadership and management good — and behaviour and safety of pupils outstanding.

Nightingale House unveils new kitchen

With 200 residents, 300 members of staff and non-stop opening hours 365 days a year, Nightingale House could be the biggest kosher catering operation in the country. As a result, last October the Clapham Jewish care home opened a new £900,000 kosher kitchen to cater for its large residential community.

Fowl play as new chicken line is launched

A new line of chickens aimed at strictly Orthodox consumers was due to reach shops in London this week as an alternative to the Kedassia brand.

Oif Mehadrin chickens — oif is Yiddish for poultry, mehadrin describes a stricter standard of inspection — are being distributed by wholesalers Lewco Pak under the label of the London Board for Shechita.
