Barbe-queues as UJIA courts South Africans

A traditional South African barbecue in the grounds of a Totteridge mansion provided a taste of home for ex-pats on Sunday.

Organised by UJIA as part of its outreach work among overseas communities in London, the Big Braai attracted around 260 hungry patrons, among them Barbra and Brian Davis, who came to England 16 years ago and now live in Hampstead Garden Suburb.

£12m rebuild unveiled by South Hampstead shul

South Hampstead Synagogue representatives have unveiled plans for a £12 million redevelopment of the north-west London shul.

The plans, submitted to Camden Council, involve opening a common room, café and men and women’s seating on the same level — after congregation members put forward requests to change the gallery seating.

Hammerson House celebrates its centenarians

Hammerson House held a “Celebrating 100 years” party in honour of its centenarian residents — who rack up more than a millennium between them.

The Hamspstead care home, which merged with Nightingale House in 2012, counts 11 people aged over 100 among its 73 residents. The oldest resident, Edith Kaufman, celebrated her 110th birthday last week.
