Boris gets walk-on part at Finchley crossings

London Mayor Boris Johnson has visited the redeveloped Henlys Corner junction, where automated pedestrian crossings make life safer for Finchley Synagogue congregants walking to shul.

Mr Johnson was accompanied by Finchley and Golders Green MP, Mike Freer, and former Barnet mayor, Eva Greenspan.

Finchley free school planning on 2013 opening

Supporters of a new cross-communal Jewish primary in Finchley intend to apply to the Department for Education next month to open it as a free school in 2013.

"We look like we're making good progress," reported Matt Plen, director of the Assembly of Masorti Synagogues and one of the steering group of parents.

Job centre appeals to travelling audience

A Jewish employment advisory service operating in Finchley and Redbridge has gone underground in an attempt to reach more community members in need of work-finding assistance.

Resource - which has helped 8,000 people into employment - has launched a poster campaign at Tube stops in major Jewish areas such as Gants Hill, Golders Green and Edgware.


Ivy House puts down roots for youth wing

Finchley and Golders Green MP Mike Freer was among the guests at the groundbreaking ceremony for the London Jewish Cultural Centre's £1 million youth wing, which will offer activities for children and teens in the grounds of Ivy House, Golders Green.

Named in memory of a young teacher who died of cancer, the Catherine Lewis Centre will open in autumn 2012.


London synagogue initiatives attract the votes of politicians

Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone joined Muswell Hill teenagers clearing litter from Cherry Tree Wood as part of a Mitzvah Day venture. The Hornsey and Wood Green MP said she "really enjoyed the good clear up, with some spring bulb planting to top it off. I am always excited to join the local synagogue for this wonderful day of community action.


New York education in Finchley synagogue

Four students from New York’s Yeshiva University presented 10 learning events for women at Finchley Synagogue over the Simchat Torah weekend.

Chavi Becker, Kira Joel, Shlomit Cohen and Derora Tropp also led the women’s dancing in synagogue during the festival.

The well-attended activities ranged from interactive Torah study to learning-based afternoon teas in members’ homes.


Woodside Park eruv application

A planning application for a north London eruv has been submitted to Barnet Council by Woodside Park Synagogue trustees.

If approved, the eruv will cover four square miles, taking in Whetstone, Oakleigh Park, Totteridge and parts of Finchley. It will abut the existing north-west London eruv, as well as the eruvim planned by the Barnet and Mill Hill communities.
