L'Chaim: Kosher pub set to open in north London

The closure of the Fernandez kosher pub left many Jewish north Londoners without a watering hole where they could socialise.

But, one year on, another kosher pub is set to open under Federation supervision.

Paraglider dies in accident

The mother of a 25-year-old East Finchley man who was killed in a paragliding accident in the Spanish Pyrenees last week has described him as an inspiration.

Teen fined for shul break-in

A teenager has admitted smashing a synagogue window after "going off the rails" and running away from home.

The 16-year-old, from an Orthodox Jewish family, was arrested in May after police were called to the Magen Avraham congregation in Finchley, north London, when a member of the public heard a window smash and saw someone in the grounds.

Bnei Akiva in training

Israeli expert Ilan Frydman was flown over by Bnei Akiva for a training day for more than 150 madrichim from Finchley, Edgware, Borehamwood, Southgate and Birmingham.

BA's Deborah Blank said: "It's really incredible the significant improvements we have already noticed from this investment in the future leaders of Anglo-Jewry." A Shabbaton in Bushey was organised to train local leaders.

'Open-minded' school planners test demand

A group of parents is exploring the possibility of setting up an "open-minded traditional" Jewish free school in north London.

They have launched a survey to gauge interest in the idea of opening the school somewhere in Finchley, Whetstone or Woodside Park.

Rabbi Neil Janes is joining the ministerial team at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, St John's Wood.

LJS senior rabbi Alexandra Wright ordained him at Leo Baeck College in 2006 and he served Finchley Progressive Synagoue before moving to Israel to study for a PhD in Jewish thought, which he will continue in the UK.
