Mitzvah Day: London communities pitch in

By Robyn Rosen, November 19, 2009

To appreciate the breadth of Mitzvah Day activities, you need to experience some of its projects first hand. So with Mitzvah Day committee member Ruth Smilg as my chauffeur and guide, I embarked on a whistlestop tour of events in the capital.

First up was the “collectathon” at New North London Synagogue in Finchley, where at 10am, the hall was filled with an ever-growing pile of clothes, shoes, food, toiletries and stationery.

A Finchley man was fined £350 for filming up a woman’s skirt in Sainsbury’s.

He was fined at City of London magistrates’ court for disorderly behaviour and has been forced to resign from his law firm, which has not been identified.

Wingate progress in Ryman League Cup

By Danny Caro, November 12, 2009

Maccabiah star James Gershfield helped Wingate & Finchley surprise Premier Division Hendon in the Ryman League Cup.

Trailing 3-1 with the game in stoppage time, the Blues looked dead and buried. But Gershfield, a 60th minute substitute, hauled them to within a goal of the Greens after rounding the keeper and slotting home.

The tie was deadlocked after 90 minutes with the scoreline 1-1. Aron Freeman almost nicked it in normal time for Wingate but his shot was tipped wide by the Hendon keeper.

Wingate won the penalty shootout with Gershfield converting from the spot.

Child Nazi refugees reunited with rescuers

By Robyn Rosen, November 12, 2009

A meeting at New North London Synagogue in Finchley brought together former child refugees from Nazism and those who rescued Jews during Hitler’s reign.

Marking the 71st anniversary of the Kindertransport to England, the Kindness of Strangers event attracted over 100 people. They included Elizabeth Rosenthal, 82, of Richmond, who was 11 when she arrived here on the Kindertransport.
