Leo Baeck cuts back on services

Leo Baeck College is looking to streamline services and focus on its core work of training of rabbis and educators.

The streamlining follows a review by the Progressive rabbinic academy, which has resulted in the closure of some of its educational consultancy services.

Double vision delights Masorti dinner crowd

December 10, 2012

Masorti’s vision for the next 10 years was outlined to a record 200 guests at the movement’s annual dinner at the New North London Synagogue, Finchley, on Sunday.

“We aim to double our membership, bringing the amount of individuals in the Masorti family to 15,000,” chief executive Matt Plen told them. “We also hope to establish new synagogues in key demographic areas.”

Finchley primary school recruits head

The cross-communal Jewish primary school due to open in Finchley next September has appointed its head.

Marc Shoffren, director of studies of North London Collegiate’s junior school and a former deputy head of Clore Shalom, will join the project full-time in April.

Ross helps to raise £70,000 for Jewish Blind and Disabled

TV presenter Jonathan Ross joked that he felt awkward receiving a goodie bag from fundraisers at a lunch for Jewish Blind and Disabled on Wednesday: “I feel weird accepting gifts from charities.”

He told the 200-strong gathering at the Avenue Holiday Inn in Finchley that he “liked Jewish culture and I’m married to a Jewish women.

Finchley school gets the go-ahead

Probably no Jewish school has ever moved so quickly from drawing board to state approval as the cross-communal primary for Finchley.

Martin Blain, interim chairman of governors for the school, which plans to open in 2013, recalled a meeting of interested parents last December to consider the results of an initial survey into local demand.

New Seinfeld episode is all about pupils and Fairtrade

Jerry Seinfeld has rewarded children from Finchley’s Akiva Primary for their supporting role for Fairtrade.

The pupil council ran a contest promoting the purchase of Fairtrade items.

A parent who met the comedian told him about the initiative and Mr Seinfeld was so impressed that he arranged for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to be delivered to the school when the winning class was announced.

Eliana Mann thriving after removal of 3kg tumour

The life of a 10-year-old Kerem Primary pupil has been transformed by the removal of a 3kg tumour from her abdomen.
Eliana Mann’s tumour was discovered in 2009 after her parents Tara and Paul became concerned that she was not eating and was constantly tired. Mr Mann also noticed that Eliana’s feet had not grown and that her stomach was unusually hard.
