Survivor thanks World Jewish Relief

A Holocaust survivor this week expressed his gratitude to World Jewish Relief for helping him to start a new life in the UK.

Addressing WJR’s 80th anniversary dinner at London’s Guildhall, Harry Spiro — who was 15 when freed from Theresienstadt in 1945 — came here with the help of the charity, when it was known as the Central British Fund.

Sir Tom Jones helps Norwood rock to the tune of £3.2 million

And, with a little help from Sir Tom Jones, drummer Saul Zur-Szpiro supplied it to the 1,100 guests at Norwood’s annual dinner on Monday, which raised £3.2 million for its work with children, families and those with learning difficulties.

Joyce, 90, is honoured for life of volunteering

A 90-year-old Londoner who has devoted her life to volunteering was “surprised” but delighted to be honoured as an unsung hero of Jewish Care at a business lunch in Mayfair on Wednesday.

Joyce Saffron was presented with the Topland Award, recognising a person who has made a significant difference to the charity’s work — in her case, for 50 years.

Lucas proves one in a million for Nightingale

Meir Panim chooses Idol

Former Israel Idol winner Hagit Yaso brought additional glamour to the Meir Panim UK fundraising dinner in London’s West End on Saturday evening.

The 24-year-old, who won the talent contest in 2011, treated the 250 guests to emotional renditions of Adon Olam and Yerushalayim Shel Zahav. Dinner was prepared by Michelin-starred chef Pascal Aussignac.
