Joyce, 90, is honoured for life of volunteering

A 90-year-old Londoner who has devoted her life to volunteering was “surprised” but delighted to be honoured as an unsung hero of Jewish Care at a business lunch in Mayfair on Wednesday.

Joyce Saffron was presented with the Topland Award, recognising a person who has made a significant difference to the charity’s work — in her case, for 50 years.

Lucas proves one in a million for Nightingale

Matt Lucas kept 550 guests laughing on Monday evening at the Nightingale Hammerson dinner at London’s Guildhall.

And the charity’s treasurers were also happy, with proceeds exceeding £1 million, in particular to support a major redevelopment at Hammerson House in north London.

Meir Panim chooses Idol

Former Israel Idol winner Hagit Yaso brought additional glamour to the Meir Panim UK fundraising dinner in London’s West End on Saturday evening.

The 24-year-old, who won the talent contest in 2011, treated the 250 guests to emotional renditions of Adon Olam and Yerushalayim Shel Zahav. Dinner was prepared by Michelin-starred chef Pascal Aussignac.

UJIA makes a meal of a £3.3 million night

UJIA’s largest dinner in a decade raised £3.3 million for Israel and Zionist youth and education at home on Monday night — up £200,000 on last year’s event.

Dinner chair Keith Black said the support of the 870 guests sent “a resoundingly clear message that our community refuses to take Israel for granted and will not let our children take Israel for granted”.
