Jewish grandmother is mayor of Hertsmere

Grandmother Linda Silver, who has been involved in local politics for 36 years, will next week take office as the Mayor of Hertsmere.

The Bushey and District Synagogue member was elected as a Hertsmere councillor in 1974 and has been a Tory whip in Hertsmere and an adviser to the Conservative group on Brent Council.

Her mayoral charities will be Jewish mental health support organisation Jami and Help for Heroes, in memory of her father, who served as a colonel in the Royal Engineers.


Bushey Synagogue's £1.2m facelift

Bushey Synagogue will relocate to nearby Immanuel College for services over the summer months to facilitate a £1.2 million refurbishment of the shul.

A total revamp of the main building is due to start in May and finish in November. To minimise disruption to synagogue events, the building will not close until the majority of activities have ceased for the summer.

On completion, the congregation will gain new toilets, cloakrooms, offices, carpets, flooring and lighting.


Rabbi cancels engagements because of illness

Bushey Synagogue's Rabbi Meir Salasnik has cancelled all engagements for the next few months because of ill health.

Congregants have been informed of the news by letter. The shul gave no indication of his illness but said "the early prognosis is positive". Alternative arrangements will be made through the synagogue office for congregants who had booked the rabbi to officiate at a function.

Rabbi Salasnik, 58, has been minister at Bushey since 1979. He is secretary of the Chief Rabbi's cabinet and is responsible for hospital visitation.


New Immanuel College governors' chair

New Immanuel College governors' chair Dr Sara Levene is well aware of what the Bushey school has to offer. Her daughter Dodie, a medical student at Imperial College, was Immanuel's head girl in 2007/08. Her son Harry sits his GCSEs at Immanuel this year.

A medical and special needs recruitment adviser for the Metropolitan Police, Dr Levene has also served the Child Accident Prevention Trust and the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.

Previously a Hasmonean Primary governor, she sees Immanuel as a school "able to support academic high achievers".


Conman receives suspended sentence for fraud

A once respected businessman who lied to suppliers and investigators in a desperate bid to keep his ailing clothing company afloat has received a suspended prison sentence.

Stuart Schlomo Hirt, 56, pleaded guilty to obtaining property by deception, making a false statement and forgery, having previously denied the allegations.

St Albans Crown Court heard today (Thursday) that Hirt, from Bushey, Hertfordshire, had built up a successful business after settling in the UK from Israel in 1977.


Work starts on £1m Immanuel project

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Tuesday to mark the start of building work at Immanuel College in Bushey.

An eight-classroom block costing nearly £1 million is planned for completion in time for the next academic year. The classrooms will be multi-functional, providing large or more intimate teaching areas and an examination hall.

"We are investing for the future of Immanuel College," said governors' chair Dr Sara Levene. "This new block will add state-of-the-art facilities to the campus".
