Leeds shul goes into the deli business

The Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue in Leeds has acquired a second food store, Myers Famous Kosherie, which will trade as the Moortown Deli.

BHH bought the assets and goodwill of the deli, which had been trading under a Company Voluntary Arrangement, allowing a business with debt problems to reach a voluntary agreement with creditors.

Leeds shul picks city's first woman head

Leeds Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue has elected Rosalind Peters as president of the shul, the first woman to hold that position in the city.

"Who would have thought when I was invited to be shul secretary 23 years ago that now I am spearheading a new era at the shul," Mrs Peters said.

Mrs Peters is passionate about leading the 1,200-member shul into its next chapter.

Leeds kosher food outlet transfers ownership

Leeds Gourmet Foods, managed for over a century by Etz Chaim Synagogue members, is now under new management: Yankees Meats Leeds.

Marathon runners skip London race for Israel challenge

Berger paints a healthy picture

Mayor builds up Lego funding

Leeds Lord Mayor, Councillor Judith Chapman is building a better understanding of autism with a giant Lego site at the Merrion shopping mall.

Councillor Chapman - the city's first Jewish woman mayor - set residents the challenge of making the Leeds coat of arms out of Lego, with shoppers donating money for the bricks. Money raised will go towards the mayoral charity, Special Autism Services.

Leeds hails welfare head

Local MP Fabian Hamilton led the tributes to Edward Ziff at a party on Tuesday marking his retirement as Leeds Jewish Welfare Board president.

Limmud draws big crowd - but not the young

Participants in Sunday's Leeds Limmud enjoyed lectures on subjects as diverse as teaching the Holocaust to Muslim pupils and salsa dancing at Buenos Aires barmitzvahs.

The 50 topics also included discrimination towards Ethiopian Jews in Israel and how humour aided Jewish survival.
