Stormin Norman on fire

By Danny Caro, August 26, 2010

This season has been very sporting for batsmen and bowlers cricket-wise. A few dry, hot weeks have been combined with some very wet ones.

But nothing could not stop Norman Marine, anything but a fair-weather bowler, from almost putting himself into the history books after another demon spell.

Representing Old Cholmeleians 2nd, 'Stormin' Norman terrorised the batsmen of Potters Bar 3rd. He played the lead role, finishing with figures of 8.2-4-7-6 as Bar were dismissed for a paltry 23 in the Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League.

To meet the needs of the growing Hertfordshire Jewish community, Norwood's family support service is branching out into Elstree.

Although social workers and other staff at the charity's Kennedy Leigh Family Centre in Hendon already assist many Herts families, a Wednesday morning service will be available at Allum Lane Community Centre from October.

By Robyn Rosen, July 30, 2010

A rise in antisemitic incidents in Manchester is down to a "shifting, and increasingly visible" Jewish community in north Manchester, according to a new report.

Antisemitic incidents are more than 50 per cent higher in the first six months of this year in Greater Manchester than in the same period in 2008 - and make up almost a third of antisemitic incidents in the UK.

There were 89 antisemitic incidents in Greater Manchester recorded by the Community Security Trust in the first six months of 2010.

JFS ruling creates barmitzvah confusion

By Simon Rocker, July 29, 2010

A number of Orthodox Jewish schools are stopping organising bar or batmitzvah ceremonies for pupils because they cannot tell if they are halachically Jewish, according to the head of the United Synagogue's Rabbinic Council.

Rabbi Yitzchak Schochet explained that the change was being made as a result of last year's court ruling on Jewish school admissions.

Speaking last weekend at an event in north London, he said that a meeting had recently taken place for young people who act as wardens in midweek services that take place at various schools.

Gove: free schools 'can still be totally Jewish'

By Jessica Elgot, July 22, 2010

Jewish parents hoping to set up new schools under the coalition government's flagship education proposals may have to take pupils of different faiths - at the expense of Jewish pupils.

Empowering parents to set up free schools was a key pledge in the Conservative election campaign, but those schools must take 50 per cent of pupils without reference to religion.

The 50 per cent ceiling on faith admissions for new academies was introduced under Labour, but the Coalition government has decided not to lift it, so it will apply to new free schools as well.
