Wizo honours couple's golden wedding and 50 years' service

Bristol Wizo honoured Marcia and Gerald Gee by presenting the couple with a Wizo certificate to mark their golden wedding and 50 years' service to both the group and the community. The presentation was at a Wizo lunch hosted by Sheila Brill at her Bristol home.

Japenese documentary about local radio station

A Japanese TV company has been shooting a documentary in Bristol about the local Jewish-Muslim radio station Salaam-Shalom. As part of the project, the producer Yasuko Kobayashi — who works for NHK — wanted to film Orthodox prayer. She approached student chaplain Rabbi Natan Levy who was able to arrange the filming of an informal minyan that he organises for congregant Yoram Adani, whose who is saying kaddish for his father who died recently.

Student chaplain recieves Honorary Life Membership

Student chaplain Rabbi Natan Levy has been awarded the highest award that a student union can give. Rabbi Levy has received Honorary Life Membership to the University of Bristol Student Union for his services to students. Upon accepting the award, Rabbi Levy recalled how he worked with the Islamic Society to lobby for the Bristol Union to sell both kosher and halal food.

Rabbi Levy has been serving the South West for the past three years.

The curse of Bristol's Hebrew Congregation

Within the space of a fortnight, five members of the Bristol community have all seriously injured a limb. Bristol Hebrew Congregation members Sheila Tobias, Helen Vegoda and John Adler all broke a bone, while Ivor Saltman fell off his bike and sustained a serious sprain. Scott Vanger, a pupil at Clifton College, broke a wrist. “Members of the community are wondering if someone up there is trying to tell us something,” said Mr Adler.

Demo in Dublin, VIP guest in Wales

Ireland’s Israeli Ambassador Zion Evrony told the 150 guests at a celebratory reception in Dublin that despite Israel’s impressive achievements, what it wanted most was peace with its neighbours. However, the difficulties entailed were illustrated by a group of Palestinian supporters who heckled participants as they arrived at the venue. Welsh First Minister Rhodri Morgan was among the 350 guests at the Israel 60 celebrations at Cardiff’s City Hall.

Bristol shul floods

Members of Bristol Hebrew Congregation have been forced to hold services in alternative premises following a flood at the Park Row synagogue caused by a water tank in the roof. The flood has caused extensive damage to the social hall, part of the entrance lobby and the rear of the synagogue.
