Women's dinner raises £500 for Torah Academy nursery

Forty women attended a dinner, held at the home of Penina Efune of Lubavitch Brighton, and raised just over £500 for Torah Academy nursery. Event organiser Tessa Bass said: "There was a real mix of ladies from throughout the community, including newcomers to Brighton and Hove."

Showtime teenager to set up new youth group in Brighton

A teenager is to set up a new youth group in Brighton. Gabi Markham, 14, who participated in fundraising performance Showtime 2008 in Hove, felt that friendships formed during the show should continue. She explained: "I got in touch with representatives from Habonim in London and they agreed to run a three-day summer camp for 11- to 16-year-olds in Hove at the end of July." She added that this will be followed by the establishment of a youth group, Chai.

Actress and director Shirley Jaffe wins Audience vote Angel award

Actress and director Shirley Jaffe is one of the Bite Size Theatre team who gained the Audience vote Angel award sponsored by the local Argus for the 10-minute plays which were performed at Brighton Festival in May. She performed these plays at Glastonbury Festival's Arts Cafe and plans to perform them at the Arundel and Edinburgh festivals in August. Mrs Jaffe is a member of Jacs.

Ann Conn hosted a tea party for Women's Royal Voluntary Service's 70th birthday

Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation member Ann Conn hosted a tea party in her home for the Women's Royal Voluntary Service to celebrate the organisation's 70th birthday. Mrs Conn has served with the WRVS for 20 years.

Sussex community raises enough to buy a communal bus

Sarah Wilks, co-ordinator of the cross-communal organisation Helping Hands, told Sussex Jewish Representative Council delegates that, after five years’ fundraising, the community had raised enough to buy a communal bus. The vehicle, which will be dedicated at a ceremony in August, has seating for 15 passengers as well as facilities for three wheelchairs. It will be available free to communal organisations, except a charge for fuel.

110 attend reunion of former pupils of Whittinghame College

Some 110 people attended a reunion of former pupils of Whittinghame College in Brighton. The Sunday lunch, held at the Grand Hotel, was one of a series of reunions of the college which have been held around the world since the Jewish boarding school closed in 1967. The reunion also featured a lecture given at the hotel on Saturday evening by a former pupil, Professor Jacob Israelachvili.

Chatham Memorial Synagogue hosts stag party for Brighton-based solicitor

Members of Chatham Memorial Synagogue hosted a stag party for Jonathan Gilmour, a Brighton-based solicitor who is marrying Sharon Addlestone of Leeds. The nine men wanted to celebrate Mr Gilmour’s marriage with a weekend away from home but within reach of a synagogue in order to attend Shabbat services.

Brighton Lubavitch organises ice-cream kiddush

June 20, 2008
Some 60 people attended a Shavuot ice-cream kiddush at Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation’s West Hove Synagogue. The service was followed by a picnic held in a marquee. Both events were organised by Brighton Lubavitch.
