Peace talks defuse Brighton nursery dispute

A contentious plan by Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation to relocate the local Jewish nursery may be shelved after last-minute negotiations.

Accepting children from across the Jewish spectrum, the nursery has operated rent-free from a New Church Road, Hove, building for 30 years. However, the Hebrew congregation says it urgently needs income from the site "to fund a full-time rabbi".

Tea party held to celebrate 37 years' service of Brighton and Hove Jewish Welfare Board chairman

A tea party was held to celebrate 37 years' service of Brighton and Hove Jewish Welfare Board chairman Edwin Prince. The event was held at the home of vice-chairman Miriam Book, who takes over the role. Mrs Book said: "Edwin will be an awesome act to follow. He has always acted with tact and diplomacy and we are so pleased that he will stay on as a member of the board."

Delegates attend "mini-Limmud" at Reform Synagogue

More than 70 delegates of the Association of Religious Education Inspectors, Advisers and Consultants held their annual conference in Brighton where they attended programmes showcasing the local community organised by Doris Levinson of Sussex Jewish Representative Council. Delegates visited Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation's Middle Street Synagogue and attended a "mini-Limmud" at the Reform Synagogue.

Sussex Jewish Community Care Forum holds first discussion

Sussex Jewish Community Care Forum, which represents the city's Jewish welfare groups, held the first of a series of discussions. "When experimentation becomes something more destructive" was addressed by addiction psychotherapist Martin Freeman and Sonia Douek, manager of Jewish Care's family carers' addiction service. The event was held at the home of Helping Hands co-ordinator Sarah Wilks.

Hove couple organising charity weekend show at Theatre Royal

A Hove couple is organising a charity weekend show which is to take place at the city's Theatre Royal. Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation members Robert and Corinne Blass have obtained the services of Abba tribute band Abba Gold, who will perform on the weekend of August 22 in aid of the Argus appeal for local charities. Theatre Royal chief executive Julian Boast said: "We recognise the value of supporting our local community."

Women's dinner raises £500 for Torah Academy nursery

Forty women attended a dinner, held at the home of Penina Efune of Lubavitch Brighton, and raised just over £500 for Torah Academy nursery. Event organiser Tessa Bass said: "There was a real mix of ladies from throughout the community, including newcomers to Brighton and Hove."

Showtime teenager to set up new youth group in Brighton

A teenager is to set up a new youth group in Brighton. Gabi Markham, 14, who participated in fundraising performance Showtime 2008 in Hove, felt that friendships formed during the show should continue. She explained: "I got in touch with representatives from Habonim in London and they agreed to run a three-day summer camp for 11- to 16-year-olds in Hove at the end of July." She added that this will be followed by the establishment of a youth group, Chai.

Actress and director Shirley Jaffe wins Audience vote Angel award

Actress and director Shirley Jaffe is one of the Bite Size Theatre team who gained the Audience vote Angel award sponsored by the local Argus for the 10-minute plays which were performed at Brighton Festival in May. She performed these plays at Glastonbury Festival's Arts Cafe and plans to perform them at the Arundel and Edinburgh festivals in August. Mrs Jaffe is a member of Jacs.

Ann Conn hosted a tea party for Women's Royal Voluntary Service's 70th birthday

Brighton and Hove Hebrew Congregation member Ann Conn hosted a tea party in her home for the Women's Royal Voluntary Service to celebrate the organisation's 70th birthday. Mrs Conn has served with the WRVS for 20 years.

Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations raise £7,000 for Ichlu Reim Food Programme
