BRADY MACCABI REDS 3 ALYTH BELSIZE 1
Goals from Ben Broomfield, Josh Saul and Zack Leslie helped improving Brady Reds overcome Alyth Belsize in a keenly contested encounter at The Ark.
The opening exchanges were scrappy. Initially, Brady found it difficult to settle against a well-organised Alyth side and were thankful for a couple of early saves from stand-in goalkeeper Max Appleby to keep them in the game.
But they soon found their rhythm with Ben Broomfield and Idan Gidi dominating the midfield and Levi Wasserman a constant threat up front. However, just when Brady seemed to be gaining the upper hand, a defensive mix-up allowed Alyth to score a breakaway goal.
If anything, that goal seemed to galvanise Brady, who spent much of the remainder of the half camped in their opponent’s half. And they fully deserved their equaliser when Broomfield struck a sweet free-kick from about 25 yards which the Alyth goalkeeper could only touch into his own net.
The second half was a more one-sided affair with Brady really taking the game to Alyth. Josh Saul’s pace down the left wing caused Alyth problems all afternoon and, after a couple of close calls, Saul finally got his reward, bundling the ball home after some intense Brady pressure.
At 2-1 down, Alyth pressed for an equaliser but the Brady defence, superbly marshalled by Kyle Sachs, stood firm. Then, with five minutes remaining, Zack Leslie broke down the right wing, hit a shot from just outside the penalty area which curled wickedly, struck the post and rebounded into the net off the hapless Alyth goalkeeper. One for the dubious goals committee to sort out but Leslie claimed it all the same.
Brady manager Dean Appleby said: "The boys continue to work hard in training and today’s performance is a result of that hard work. This is a new team and it’s great to see them improving each week."
