David Shenkin, Head of Scottish delegation, said: "This is my 7th Maccabiah and over the years I have seen the number of participating countries grow, and my wish has always been for Scotland to be one of them. It's a fantastic opportunity for Scottish sportsmen to participate at the highest level of Jewish sport. The success of the Scottish competitors at the Olympics has lifted the country and in our own way we hope the Maccabiah will do the same."
With over 30 sports ranging from football to tennis to squash, there is no excuse not to get involved, check out the full list of sports online and get involved today!
It's not just for the participants. Families, friends and the whole community are excited about the Games and we are expecting quite a following.
Alan Susskind, Manager of Scotland's Squash team, has won 6 medals at various European Maccabiah Games. He comments: "If the atmosphere in Rome is anything to go by, this will be spectacular. I'm really excited about competing in Israel next year and representing my country in what is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world."
Euro 2008 have shown us how its done but we are in no doubt that there is some top class talent amongst the Maccabiah Scotland squad. Footballer Danny Gardner, adds "I've played for GB in Israel before, but there's nothing quite like the good old Scottish banter. Nothing can compare to being away with the lads and being part of your ‘home' football team."
The website is not only the place to register but you can also read the latest news in the lead up to the games, get helpful training and preparation tips and leave messages on the blog - you'll probably find you will get back in touch with old team mates & friends.
The teams are already starting to get in shape... it might be a year away but Scotland are determined to come home with some well earned medals and are not leaving it to the last minute to get those legs looking good in their kilts!
