Daniel Grabiner has been elected as next year's president of the Union of Jewish Students.
The 21-year-old Leeds University student, who ran on the slogan "Grabiner - Making UJS currant", won by 258 votes to 90. He takes over from current chair Alex Dwek in July.
Mr Grabiner said he was "elated and in shock" at his win.
"I've been thinking about this for so long – I can't believe it's happening.
"Everyone has been unbelievably supportive. After the result I had so many messages my Blackberry nearly exploded!"
He thanked his opponent Marcelle Jennings for a challenging campaign. "She's a sensational candidate," he said. "I hope she will still be involved in UJS."
The new president said he is looking forward to helping make UJS more "involving, relevant and engaging". But, for now he said he would be focusing on finishing his degree.
