Interfaith project St Philip's Centre came on board for a Mitzvah Day initiative in Leicester also involving the Progressive congregation and the League of Jewish Women.
Volunteers collected thousands of toiletry items for those living in safe houses as a consequence of domestic violence.
Beneficiaries included Women's Aid Leicestershire, Victim Support and Action Homeless. The campaign started a month ago and collections were made outside Asda and Tesco on the day itself.
Riaz Ravat from St Philip's Centre said: "With the tough economic climate we didn't expect such a fantastic reaction. It is clear that a precedent has been set and that Mitzvah Day will have to become an annual fixture in the life of Leicestershire. Leicester's faith communities have shown that when we work together to support the vulnerable in society, we can make a huge difference."
