Shahar Peer’s run at the French Open was halted at the fourth round stage by top seed Serena Williams.
Having accounted for qualifiers Nuria Llagostera Vives and Bethanie Mattek, Peer caused one of the upsets of the competition when she eliminated 13th seed Marion Bartoli in straight sets in the third round, but she was unable to repeat her heroics against the 2002 winner.
Peer was beaten 6-2, 6-2 in 57 minutes at Roland Garros. Seeded 18, Peer, 23, was not helped by four double faults and 21 unforced errors.
Israel still has involvement in the doubles competitions. Peer and Monica Niculescu face the second seeds in the quarter-finals of the women’s event, while Andy Ram, together with Julian Knowle, seeded 10, in the last eight of the men’s competition.
