A BNP candidate sent Jewish voters in Essex leaflets which showed Muslims holding up antisemitic slogans.
BNP candidate for Chingford and Woodford Green, Julian Leppert, caused an outcry in August when the numberplate of his black Ford Focus appeared to spell “Nazi”.
His election literature showed Muslims holding up signs saying “God Bless Hitler” and “Be prepared for the real Holocaust”.
Mr Leppert said that the images were “to remind people of a few home truths”.
Jewish leaders have condemned the leaflets as causing divisions in the community.
Jon Benjamin, chief executive of the Board of Deputies, said: “No-one should be taken in by these transparent attempts to demonise Muslims and to sow discord and division between our communities. Islamist extremism is a real issue, but so is rightwing extremism, and there is no lesser of these two evils.
“Dozens of Jewish and other organisations have signed up to our pledge to counter racism and bigotry from wherever it emanates and instead to promote a message of hope, not hate."
Rabbi David Hulbert of Bet Tikvah Synagogue, who is a member of the borough’s Three Faiths Forum, said: “It’s blatantly Islamaphobic. I don’t think they’ll pick up many votes from the Jewish community here.”
