Possibly the largest matzah ball in the world was unveiled in New York last week, and immediately drew complaints from elderly Jewish diners. The enormous dumpling was made from 1,000 eggs, 80lb of margarine and a mountain of matzah meal. It weighed 267 lb and its diameter was 29.2 inches - vital statistics that did not bode well for its fluffiness. Created to publicise a basketball game between the New York Knicks and Israeli basketball team Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, which will raise funds for an Israeli orphanage, it was cooked in a 100 gallon custom-built saucepan and then given a police escort across town. It ended up at the Good Companions Senior Centre, which served up slices of the giant ball to its soup. "This is not like my mother's matzo balls," complained Seymour Kestenbaum, 91,"I love matzo balls, but they have to be like my mother's." And a commentator on a local newspaper’s website had another kvetch: “ This is how we allocate police resources, to escort a friggin' matzah ball??? “
