A kosher menu for a sheikh

As lunch orders go, it is one of the most unusual ever served by kosher caterer Tony Page.

But last week His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, tucked into a London Beth Din-supervised feast at his private residence in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Sheikh Mohammed, whose wealth is estimated at around £11 billion, was hosting a delegation of Jewish business leaders from America — and chose Mr Page’s firm to provide the food.

The menu included a selection of smoked salmon, lamb with herb crust, and baked sea bass. Fresh fruit was served for dessert.
Mr Page, whose business is based in Willesden, north west London, said: “It was a small event. We were asked to provide catering services for lunch. They were very charming.

“We have worked in many strange environments but we had never worked with Sheikh Mohammed before. It was a great honour.”

Although the sheikh is Prime Minister and Vice-President of the United Arab Emirates, he is better known in Britain as one of horse-racing’s most eminent personalities.

He is the driving force behind Godolphin Racing, the thoroughbred stable based in Dubai and Newmarket. It has trained more than 140 top-grade winners in a dozen countries.

Sheikh Mohammed became leader of the UAE following his brother Sheikh Maktoum’s death in 2006.

Lee Petar, former director of communications at Bicom, was last year hired as a PR adviser to the sheikh.
