Police charge boy over cemetery desecration

Manchester police have charged a 13-year-old boy with criminal damage after 50 graves in a Jewish cemetery were vandalised.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will appear before Manchester and Salford Youth Court on August 8. The charges do not include any racially aggravated element. Greater Manchester Police said a second 13-year-old boy remains on bail until Wednesday.

Last month, north Manchester's Blackley cemetery was targeted twice in two weeks, causing an estimated £100,000 worth of damage to 56 graves, including seven belonging to one family. Swastikas and antisemitic graffiti were also painted and scratched onto historic headstones dating back to the 1900s, in what was thought to be an unconnected attack
