Stephen Fry has been labelled "evil" by Russian politician Vitaly Milonov over his views on gay rights in Russia.

Mr Fry criticised Russia’s anti-gay laws in March and called on David Cameron, Sebastian Coe and the International Olympic Committee to boycott the 2014 Russian Winter Olympics.

The writer and television presenter, whose family were killed in Hungary during the Holocaust, wrote an open letter comparing the treatment of homosexuals in Russia to the persecution of Jews during Second World War.

On his website, Mr Fry declared that Hitler “banned Jews from academic tenure or public office, he made sure that the police turned a blind eye to any beatings, thefts or humiliations afflicted on them… Putin is eerily repeating this insane crime, only this time against LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual) Russians.”

The law recently passed in Russia makes it illegal to promote homosexuality and bans teaching under 18s about homosexuality. Mr Milonov, a member of Russia's legislative assembly, said that gay people have no support in his country's society.
