It's been one of those fortnights. So much so that, in the bookshop at Jewish Book Week last Sunday, I spotted a coffee-table effort with an octopus on the cover and wearily thought "another tome on antisemitism", before closer inspection showed it to be a book on Venetian cookery.

Yachad: ZF acting like 'Zionist police'

The Zionist Federation rejected a membership application from Yachad because the grass-roots advocacy group had not done enough to show vocal support for Israel, it was claimed this week.

ZF chairman Paul Charney had initially said there were “no grounds” for not accepting the Yachad application, which was rejected following a ZF national council vote.

ZF damages us all

Last week, the Zionist Federation issued a strongly worded statement attacking George Galloway for refusing to debate with an Israeli student. The organisation clearly has no sense of irony. A few days later, the same ZF voted to reject the application by Yachad UK to affiliate to the self-proclaimed umbrella organisation for UK Zionist organisations.

Expo draws the crowds

November 29, 2012

More than 1,000 people attended the Israel Expo in London, where the exhibitors ranged from Christian Zionists to wine producers. There was also a “job centre” focusing on employment opportunities for those contemplating aliyah.

ZF chair Paul Charney said: “The Expo showed that Israel has many friends who will not abandon it at the first signs of trouble.”

Zionist Federation elects its new board

A former IDF lieutenant has been elected the new chair of the Zionist Federation.

Solicitor Paul Charney made aliyah from South Africa in 1986 and served in an armoured division of the Israeli army for four years until 1996.
