Colombia hailed for caution on Palestinian state

The World Jewish Congress (WJC) has praised the "friendship and courage" of Colombia's president after he announced that he would not recognise a unilaterally declared Palestinian state before a peace settlement with Israel was reached.


Call for Israel to join NATO

The president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) has called for Israel to be admitted into NATO in order to guarantee its survival in the future.

Ronald Lauder, writing in German newspaper Die Welt, said: “Israel needs real guarantees for its security.

“European NATO member states – including Turkey – must admit the state of Israel into the Western alliance.”

Mr Lauder referred to the anti-government uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia and said they were reminders of how “unpredictable” developments in the Middle East were.


European leader calls for 'zero-tolerance' for antisemitism

World Jewish Congress leadership role for foreign policy expert

An American commentator with expertise on the Iranian nuclear threat and Israeli security issues is to take charge of the World Jewish Congress (WJC).

Foreign policy and media expert Daniel Diker has been appointed to succeed Michael Schneider as secretary general of the 74-year-old organisation, which represents Jews in nearly 100 countries.

The outgoing secretary general will officially step down next June after four decades of involvement in the WJC and four years in charge, although Mr Diker will take on the role immediately.


Jewish billionaire: sex-scandal is Turkish plot

A senior figure in the World Jewish Congress has accused Turkey of an anti-Israel smear campaign after it was alleged that he had been involved in a prostitution scandal.

Alexander Machkevtich, the billionaire head of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress, had been linked in Turkish news reports to a raid of a yacht last month after which police took two underage prostitutes into custody.


Lauder urges Polish law

Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress, has called on Poland to restore properties seized during the Second World War and the Communist era to their rightful owners.

“To deny the return of stolen property, or adequate compensation, violates basic democratic principles,” he wrote in the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita this week. “Such denial to a Holocaust victim is a double humiliation.”


Saudis invite WJC to talks

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has invited the World Jewish Congress to attend an interfaith summit. WJC head Ron Lauder said the move was “laudable”.
