Work of gifted Jewish activist Steinberg celebrated

The former executive director of the World Jewish Congress has been described as "one of the great Jewish activists of the past decades" following his death at just 59-years-old.

Elan Steinberg had been battling cancer when he died earlier this month.

Ronald Lauder, the WJC president, said his premature death would leave a huge void in the Jewish world.

Gilad Shalit release 'wonderful' for Jewish world

Sergeant Shalit has been taken across the border to Israel and is undergoing a medical check-up. He will soon be reunited with his family, who have dedicated the last five years to securing his freedom.

Noach Flug, champion of Holocaust survivors mourned

A Holocaust survivor who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of other survivors is today being remembered as "a towering figure".

Noach Flug, who died today in Jerusalem at the age of 86, was deported from the Lodz ghetto in Poland as a teenager. He was sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau, then to a succession of camps before he hi was liberated by US soldiers in 1945.

Call for Israel to join NATO

The president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC) has called for Israel to be admitted into NATO in order to guarantee its survival in the future.

Ronald Lauder, writing in German newspaper Die Welt, said: “Israel needs real guarantees for its security.

“European NATO member states – including Turkey – must admit the state of Israel into the Western alliance.”

Mr Lauder referred to the anti-government uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia and said they were reminders of how “unpredictable” developments in the Middle East were.
