Going strong after 50 years: fundraising’s golden girls

Among the army of Jewish charity workers, no one could deserve long-service medals more than “the girls” of Southgate Wizo.

For more than half-a-century, they have met fortnightly in each other’s north London homes to plot ways to raise money for Israel.


Leeds Wizo rebrands

Three Leeds Wizo groups have undergone a merger and rebranding in a bid to increase membership.

Leeds Wizo 3000, Chaverot and Hannah Senesh groups are to come under one umbrella and be known as Leeds Wizo Aviv. Wizo member Elissa Winston explained: “The amalgamation will offer us a bigger membership and hopefully generate more ideas and events.”

Wizo raises £1.75m for Israel

Wizo UK has sent £1.75 million to Israel over the past year in support of its 100 welfare projects.

The fundraising total was announced at the women’s charity’s annual meeting, held at St John’s Wood Synagogue.

The AGM also saw the election of Jill Shaw as chair, succeeding Loraine Warren. Ms Shaw lives in Stanmore and has been involved in Wizo activities for many years.

Wizo’s Jewish Women’s Week campaign raised more than £230,000, exceeding expectations in a difficult economic climate.
